Add a frozen cold water line to our list of trailer experiences... 15° overnight was just a bit too much. Thankfully the temp just continued to improve today, and once it hit 33° at 10am, the line was clear and water was flowing again. Phew.
On to the sunshine, Needles Highway, and Sylvan Lake!
We were diverted the long way around, which took us past the Crazy Horse Memorial. There hasn't been much more change than some fingers in the last decades, so we just looked from the road as we continued on our detour. Maybe in the girls' lifetime it will be finished? It was started in 1948.
The road to Sylvan Lake is beautiful... massive rock formations making an appearance out of the steep hillsides.
See the giant's toes?
8 foot wide tunnels... didn't even have to fold the mirrors in. ;)
Sylvan Lake is like you've entered the land of giants. Massive boulders rising out of the lake, and creating a (mostly) natural dam to the north... solidified when Theodore Reder built a dam across Sunday Gulch Creek in 1881. The perfect place to explore.
We loved this encouragement to go and do!
These rocks form the dam on the north side...
Lily carried "Fredrico" 2/3 of the way around, until his body met its demise in Sunday Gulch Creek, and his head went over the dam.
Raise your hand if you've hiked down below the dam! We had NO IDEA these impressive rocks would tower over us, as we walked way under the water level.
Backside of the north side rocks.
This little helper assures that Sylvan Lake remains a gorgeous playground.
Fall wasn't ready for snow either.
Climbing back up to the water level.
It's a little more impressive now that we've seen behind the curtain!
Shady areas meant ice, and the snow was deep in places, but this 1 mile loop around the lake was well trodden. We remarked on the fact that if you follow the footsteps in front of you, you better hope they know the right way! Wisdom for life. ;)
