RoadSchool-ND/SD Toilets and Sculptures and Custer, oh my!

10/11-12/2018
Being real with you all... we discovered we have a toilet clog. Part of the problem is that we tend to conserve water while flushing, and the other part is that all the parks have the water turned off so there's no "rinsing clean out" when we dump our tanks. Not good. We have 305 miles to go though, so we'll try again at our next campsite!

On to South Dakota!

On our way southwest, we saw a beautiful, giant, flying geese sculpture just off of I-94, and decided to see what this Enchanted Highway was all about between Gladstone and Regent, ND. There are 7 metal sculptures to see, and an Enchanted Castle hotel in Regent. You can read about the artist, Gary Greff Here, and learn about his passion for a dying community.

You can really see the color tones in the sky out here!

If you look waaaaaaaay down the road, there's a snow-covered mountain. This completely caught me off guard, and caused involuntary tears... I LOVE mountains, and the majesty of them.

We set up camp for one night at Rocky Point State Recreation Area, near Belle Fourche, SD. Alas, we still have a clog, so off to the Spearfish Walmart to get a toilet snake. We had no idea how long this issue would take, and had plans to visit a museum in Deadwood tomorrow, so made a quick stop at the Geographical Center of the United States! Who knew THAT was in Belle Fourche, SD??? Now you do. ;) The addition of Hawaii and Alaska moved the site from Smith Center, Kansas.

We enjoyed the view of snow topped mountains, and no wind rocking our trailer while we slept. We had this campground all to ourselves too... I kinda like this off season thing in that regard. Next morning it was SUNNY! And clear! And a balmy 55°!

Great campground with wide roads, and long gravel pads.

The kids enjoyed the nearby playground.

On our way out of the park and off to the dump station in town, by the grace of God, we stopped when we saw the local septic guy, Joe Dirt, working in the park. He and his wife (Todd and Sheilagh) generously offered to vacuum out our tank with his truck, which helped give us options moving forward. We're so grateful for the kindness of strangers! I'll spare you the remaining details, but because of all this time troubleshooting a toilet, we skipped the museum in Deadwood, and headed straight for Custer State Park, in the Black Hills! Another answer to prayer was that, completely unplanned by me, our campsite for the next 5 nights is directly across from the bathroom/shower house! Thank you Lord! This did not go unnoticed by us. :) We've never dedicated so much thought to plumbing. Off to drive a bit of the Wildlife Loop!

Game Lodge Campground in Custer State Park... we are definitely not alone at this one!

Budding photographer at work...

So beautiful... the sun felt divine after so much cold and grey!

Reenacting a photo from 3 years ago... I have to find the original.

Antelope

We're thrilled to have gotten one of the last three spots in the campground!

Climbing... because why not? :)
