RoadSchool-ND Skyscraper on the Prairie

Today we went to the North Dakota Capitol in Bismarck. The current Capitol is actually the 2nd Capitol building. The first one burned to the ground in December of 1930. The current Capitol was started in 1932. The builders went on strike, but were given more money and told it needed to be done in two years. It was done in 1934, and had a $2million dollar budget. The style is skyscraper, and there are only three other states that use it: Nebraska, Louisiana, and Florida. This allows them to use up to 80% of workspace, as opposed to dome style Capitols using only 30-40% of their workspace. On the ground level there is the Teddy Roosevelt Rough Rider Award Hall of Fame. There are 19 floors, the 19th being the observation deck.

My favorite part of today was visiting the ND Heritage Center. There were rocks (and Lily) that glowed in the dark, the Inspiration Gallery which showed how people lived/live in North Dakota, and a painted horse.

I liked the Indian Calendar at the Heritage Center. There were 114 drawings. One for each year starting in 1798. One was showing that there were stars falling out of the sky. I also liked the giant turtle skeleton. When we stepped out if the building it had started snowing, but when we got back to the trailer it was snowing a LOT! I think we got an inch! Also, I lost my last baby tooth. On to braces next. Boo!

Yikes!

Sleety snow!
